Dance-Light Installation with Abandoned Partitur

I sold everything.

The watch that a friend gave me,
the kimono I inherited from my mother,
the house my father left me,
the dog my husband entrusted to me,
my body, my nails, my hair.

When I sold my soul,
I didn’t even have a hurting heart left.

And I sold that too,
because I had never seen, heard, or touched it,
I never really paid attention to it.

And somehow, I miss it now:
Time.

„The tragedy of life is that we grow old too soon and wise too late.“ – Pablo Picasso

The wisdom gained over a lifetime is often acquired only as one grows older, but by the time true wisdom is attained, time is limited, and the limitations imposed by age are unavoidable. Many artists who possess great creativity find that their allotted time in life is too short. However, there are also many who, despite still having time, give up and put an end to their efforts prematurely. In Japanese medieval folklore, it was believed that old tools and vessels, after existing for a hundred years, would acquire a spiritual essence and become „tsukumogami,“ gaining the ability to transform themselves.

However, it was common to discard these items before reaching this milestone, resulting in many becoming vengeful spirits with unfulfilled desires for a soul, thus troubling people. Whether it be people, objects, or animals, if we do not abandon them despite their seemingly useless and ineffective agedness, perhaps they, too, might eventually reach a transformative realm of time and space.

In her solo performance Mis-sing One, Yui Kawaguchi, herself in the later phases of her dance career, approaches this theme metaphorically, understanding the work as a kind of abandoned score: a body that continues to resonate beyond its given span. With humor and poetic elements, she explores the universal experience of aging – an abyss that connects all living beings.
